8.5.1.2. Determining compressor size

Piston compressors are designed with reserves of approx. 40 %. Reserves are included from experience, in order to have a contingency for possible extensions to the system and to use the compressor intermittently. Intermittent operation means less wear.

The ideal usage rate UR for a piston compressor is around 60 %. BOGE piston compressors are designed for 100 % UR = continuous operation. When calculating the ideal compressor size this means: the required FAD LB must be divided by 0.6 in order to obtain the minimum FAD min of the piston compressor.
